Using Optum Insurance for Addiction Treatment

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) ensures insurance providers, including Optum, cover drug rehab, alcohol treatment, medical detoxification, and other proven therapies. Your Optum health insurance plan must cover mental health and addiction treatment services provided by in-network providers when medically necessary. In-network providers contract with Optum to provide services at lower rates than out-of-network providers.

The type of plan you have will determine service coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. For example, a health maintenance organization (HMO) or preferred provider organization (PPO) plan will have different costs and coverage flexibility. We can help you better understand your insurance provider and treatment options.

What Addiction Treatment Services Does Optum Cover?

We treat alcohol, opioid, and prescription drug addiction, among other forms of SUD. Our treatment facility has quality substance use and mental health care services covered by Optum and other popular health plans. We encourage you to verify your Optum insurance coverage by calling your provider or contacting our admissions team.

Residential Treatment (Inpatient Rehab)

Our residential drug and alcohol rehab programs provide a structured environment where you can put all your energy into healing and building skills for a healthy future. Optum covers inpatient treatment under most plans with prior approval.

Outpatient Treatment (IOP, PHP)

Partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment programs offer added flexibility that allows you to attend comprehensive addiction and mental health treatment while maintaining personal or professional responsibilities. Optum may cover or partially cover IOP and PHP rehab.

Therapy (Individual, Group, Family)

Our inpatient and outpatient programs use evidence-based therapies, including individual counseling and therapy, family therapy and education, relapse prevention programs, holistic addiction treatment, and psychiatric care. Optum covers counseling, psychiatric care, and other therapy sessions.

Dual Diagnosis Care

Treatment for dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders often includes case management services and integrative therapy. We use medication management, talk therapy, psychiatric care, and other services to help clients with dual diagnosis. The ACA ensures all types of insurance cover treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions impacting your quality of life and sobriety.

Aftercare
Planning

We have extended care and aftercare programs for after you complete our rehab program. Optum coverage generally continues during aftercare. We collaborate closely with alumni to create a tailored aftercare treatment plan that may include sober living, individual or group therapy, and 12-Step meetings to support your ongoing recovery journey.

Understanding In-Network vs Out-of-Network Costs

An in-network treatment provider offers greater service flexibility and lower costs due to negotiated contracts with Optum or other insurance companies. Out-of-network providers do not have a contract and charge higher rates, and some treatment facilities are unable to offer certain services to out-of-network clients.

What You May Pay Out-of-Pocket

Your insurance plan may only partially cover the costs of rehab programs, leaving you with out-of-pocket expenses, including deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Once you meet the out-of-pocket maximum, your insurance plan should cover 100% of any additional cost.

A deductible is the amount you have to pay before your insurance kicks in and begins to cover services. How much you have to pay will vary significantly depending on the type of plan you have. Once you meet your deductible, you may have coinsurance to pay, which is a percentage of your treatment expenses. Copays are set amounts you must pay for each treatment session or procedure. You may qualify for lower copays if you meet certain financial criteria.

We can provide you with information about any services that may require copays or deductibles before you begin treatment at New Found Life.

Levels of Care Covered by Optum at New Found Life

Most people benefit from a step-down approach to treatment that uses multiple levels of care to increase independence gradually. Optum provides care at various levels to improve treatment outcomes and program adherence.

Residential Treatment (Primary & Extended Care)

The step-down model usually starts with primary care, which may be medical detox or residential treatment. Once you become physically and emotionally stabilized, you can step down to a lower level of care that gives you greater independence while still providing accountability, guidance, and a strict treatment schedule.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

After residential care, you may benefit from intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization (PHP) programs that allow you to return home at night and on the weekends while keeping you in treatment sessions during weekdays. New Found Life offers IOP for people with SUD or dual diagnosis.

Outpatient & Continuing Care

Our outpatient programs and continuing care provide long-term support for people reintegrating into the community. We offer transitional living, aftercare planning, alumni check-ins, community events, volunteer opportunities, 12-Step groups, and other resources to help you maintain sobriety. All alumni and their families have access to our ongoing support and a welcoming community of sober peers.

Detox Coordination (Not On-Site)

We do not provide medical detox or short-term medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for withdrawal symptoms on-site. Our case managers coordinate medical detox, provide referrals to local programs, and help clients navigate the transition into our treatment programs after they complete detox.

When to Seek Help for Substance Abuse or Mental Health

Many people with SUD or mental health issues have difficulty recognizing their need for help. Often, loved ones have to intervene and prompt them to seek treatment. If you or someone you love feels hesitant, uncertain, or fearful of addiction treatment, we can provide peace of mind.

Identifying the warning signs of addiction or mental health issues makes it easier to get help early, reducing the risk of lasting health problems. Some common signs include:

  • Loss of control
  • Impact on family/work
  • Relapse patterns
  • Mental health decline

If you believe that you or someone you love may have a SUD or mental health condition, contact us today. You are not alone. We can help you regain control of your life and build a better future.

FAQs About Optum Insurance and Rehab Coverage

The fastest way to verify your Optum insurance coverage is to sign in to your client portal on their official website to check your plan details. You can also call the number on your insurance card. Our admissions team can assist with verifying your insurance.

You will need to verify every service offered to ensure you do not encounter any unexpected fees or expenses related to treatment programs. Insurance may not always explicitly state if a service is on its website. You may need to call or have us contact your insurance provider to verify whether alternative or specialized services (e.g., trauma treatment, holistic therapies) are covered under your plan.

You may have out-of-pocket costs with your Optum insurance plan. The amount of expenses you must pay and when insurance coverage kicks in will depend on your plan details. We encourage you to check with your provider to ensure you know exactly which costs you will be responsible for. Our team can also help you with this during the intake process.

In most cases, you will need a referral from your primary care doctor or another medical professional to receive insurance pre-authorization. Before you start treatment for addiction or mental health issues, Optum will want a clinical assessment in file that indicates the medical necessity of rehabilitation and recovery support services.

Our admissions team can help expedite the approval process to ensure you receive prompt, appropriate care for your condition. We work with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and families to coordinate the start of treatment. If you are unsure whether you need a referral to get treatment for SUD or a dual diagnosis, call our office today, and we can help you determine your insurance coverage and eligibility.

Yes. Optum covers dual diagnosis treatment for addiction and mental health conditions. The specific services covered vary depending on your plan type and your provider’s determination of what is medically necessary. Insurance may cover psychotherapy, prescription medications, psychiatric sessions, family therapy, trauma-specific therapy, and other mental health treatments.

The ACA requires insurance providers to cover medical detox services, drug or alcohol rehab, and other programs. The length of coverage for those services varies depending on the type of insurance and the level of care needed. Your insurance may require clinical updates throughout treatment to determine continued eligibility.

Insurance covers Optum drug rehabs as long as the service is medically necessary. However, insurance plans generally cover 30 to 90 days of treatment, with clinical assessments to monitor ongoing need. New Found Life offers flexible program lengths of stay based on client needs rather than a set time limit.

No. We do not currently accept Medi-Cal or Medicare insurance. Our team can provide referrals to local programs that accept those plans. Our residential and outpatient rehabilitation programs have payment options for people who do not have insurance that we accept. To learn more, reach out to our office today.

We have case managers who help clients with the transition out of treatment by providing comprehensive aftercare planning. Our community also offers quality care for people who need additional accountability or structure during aftercare. We have gender-specific transitional living homes and alumni support services to facilitate ongoing recovery.

Some people with co-occurring mental health disorders need additional support during aftercare. New Found Life can provide referrals to an outside healthcare provider for specialized aftercare services.
